Our journey from the United Kingdom to India was long and tiring. By the time we reached Kerala, we were exhausted from travelling, airport queues, and jet lag. However, the moment we arrived at Masters Kalari Heritage, everything began to change. The team welcomed us with genuine smiles and warm hospitality. It did not feel like arriving at a conventional hotel; instead, it felt like entering a peaceful wellness retreat, where everyone genuinely cared about our comfort and wellbeing. We were welcomed with refreshing drinks, and immediately we could feel the calm atmosphere around us. There was no noise, no pressure, and no rush. The peaceful surroundings themselves felt healing. After completing the formalities, the team guided us to our room. Since we were travelling with children, we had chosen a spacious family room. The retreat offers different types of accommodation suitable for couples, families, and wellness guests staying for longer therapy programmes. Our children were instantly excited about the room and surroundings. The room was spacious, comfortable, and beautifully designed with a traditional Kerala touch. Everything felt natural and simple, yet elegant.Unlike busy commercial hotels filled with modern distractions, this retreat offered something much more valuable a sense of calmness and a closer connection with nature.
Discovering the Beauty of the Retreat
Soon after settling in, the team invited us to explore the retreat. Walking around the property was one of the most memorable first impressions of our journey. The location was simply breathtaking. The retreat is surrounded by small hills, greenery, and the beautiful waters connected to Malankara Dam. Everywhere we looked, there were trees, peaceful pathways, fresh air, and beautiful views of nature. The atmosphere felt almost unreal, like a hidden paradise away from the busy world. There was also a lovely children’s play area where our children spent many happy moments during our stay. What impressed us most was the silence and peacefulness of the entire environment. We could hear birds singing in the morning and the gentle sounds of nature throughout the day. It was the perfect place to relax both physically and mentally.
Experiencing Kalaripayattu
One of the most unique experiences during our stay was witnessing and participating in Kalaripayattu, Kerala’s traditional martial art.Early in the morning, guests were invited to observe the training sessions and, where appropriate, take part in the activities. Watching the discipline, balance, strength, flexibility, and precise movements of this ancient martial art was fascinating.Kalaripayattu is much more than a form of combat. It is deeply connected with physical discipline, body control, mental focus, traditional knowledge, and Kerala’s cultural heritage. We were encouraged to participate, and although we were beginners, it became a truly enjoyable and unforgettable experience. For our children especially, it was exciting to learn something completely new and experience an important part of Kerala’s traditional culture.Experiences like this made our journey much more meaningful than an ordinary family holiday.
Beginning Our Ayurvedic Wellness Journey
After settling into the peaceful rhythm of the retreat, we had our Ayurvedic consultation with the doctor and Vaidyar. The consultation was detailed and personal. Rather than simply recommending treatments, they took time to understand our lifestyle, health concerns, stress levels, sleep patterns, and physical discomforts. It was refreshing to experience an approach that looked at the individual as a whole rather than focusing only on individual symptoms.Based on the consultation, I began therapy sessions twice a day.To be honest, the first day was not easy. Some treatments were intense and, at times, uncomfortable, particularly because my body carried a lot of stress and tension from years of a busy working life.Initially, I wondered whether I would be able to complete the full programme. However, the therapists were highly professional, patient, and caring. Every treatment was carried out with attention and sincerity.Day by day, I slowly began noticing changes. My body started to feel lighter, my muscles gradually relaxed, and my mind became calmer. The stress I had been carrying for a long time slowly began to disappear.I started sleeping better, waking up feeling refreshed, and experiencing more energy throughout the day.The therapies gradually became something I looked forward to rather than something I was worried about. It reminded me that meaningful wellness and healing can require patience, commitment, and time.By the end of our stay, I genuinely felt physically refreshed and mentally renewed.
Traditional Kerala Food
Another beautiful part of our experience was the food. The retreat served traditional Kerala vegetarian meals prepared according to Ayurvedic principles. At first, we were unsure how our children would react because they were not accustomed to eating vegetarian food for such a long period. Surprisingly, they adapted very quickly and actually enjoyed the meals. The food was simple, fresh, healthy, and full of flavour. Every meal felt nourishing rather than heavy. We enjoyed a variety of traditional Kerala dishes prepared with fresh vegetables, coconut, herbs, and traditional spices. The dining experience itself became part of our wellness journey.Instead of relying on fast food or processed meals, we learned to slow down, enjoy our food mindfully, and appreciate natural flavours.
A Retreat for the Whole Family
One thing we especially appreciated was how family-friendly the entire environment was. Many wellness retreats primarily focus on adults, but Masters Kalari Heritage created an experience where every member of our family could feel comfortable, involved, and welcome. While the adults enjoyed therapies and relaxation, the children could safely explore nature, play outdoors, experience Kalaripayattu, and learn more about Kerala’s culture and traditions. As the days passed, we gradually disconnected from our phones, busy schedules, and outside pressures. We spent more quality time together as a family than we had in a long time.Simple moments morning walks, watching the lake, sharing healthy meals, talking together, or simply sitting quietly in nature became deeply meaningful.More Than a HolidayWhat made this journey special was not luxury in the traditional sense. It was the feeling of peace, balance, genuine care, and connection with nature. In today’s fast-moving world, places that offer this kind of experience are rare.
Masters Kalari Heritage gave us something that many people are searching for but often struggle to find an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with the body, mind, family, nature, and inner wellbeing.By the final days of our stay, we could all feel the difference. Our minds were calmer, our bodies felt lighter, and our family felt more connected.Even our children did not want to leave. They had become attached to the peaceful surroundings, friendly team, natural environment, and daily rhythm of the retreat.Eventually, the time came to say goodbye.Leaving was emotional because Masters Kalari Heritage had become much more than a place where we stayed. It became an important part of our healing journey and a beautiful family memory that we will always cherish. As we packed our bags and prepared to return home, we realised that this experience had changed us in many ways.It reminded us of the importance of slowing down, taking care of our wellbeing, reconnecting with nature, experiencing traditional culture, and most importantly, spending meaningful time with our family.
This was not simply a holiday in Kerala. It was a journey of wellness, healing, culture, family, nature, and peace. And one thing is certain we will definitely return one day.
