  • Can you tell us a little about you and your retreat in Kenya and what
inspired you to open a wellness retreat here?

I’m Jeevi, a Sport Psychologist, Afrodance Fitness Instructor and the Founder of Afrowithjeevi with a passion for using movement and community to inspire others. After spending years in sport psychology,
my journey led me to explore dance as a form of wellness, which unexpectedly grew into an international community and business. The AWJ Retreat in Kenya is an extension of that journey, inspired by the transformative experiences I’ve had across Africa. I chose Kenya because it became my “soul home”, a place where I felt deeply aligned. This retreat is about more than dance; it’s about challenging personal boundaries, finding connection, and discovering the lesser-seen beauty of Kenya and Africa as a whole.

  • How does the Kenyan landscape influence the wellness experiences you offer?

The diverse surroundings here inspire a deeper sense of grounding and presence. This backdrop allows us to design experiences that not only challenge but also rejuvenate the body, mind, and spirit, embodying the
themes of freedom, exploration, and connection that are core to my approach.

  • What makes your retreat stand out compared to other wellness retreats, both in Kenya and worldwide?

Our retreat goes beyond conventional wellness programs by incorporating a dynamic fusion of Afrodance, mental well-being, and cultural immersion. Each experience is crafted to help participants push their boundaries physically, mentally, and emotionally. We’re not just focusing on relaxation but on helping people reconnect with themselves through movement, shared stories, and a supportive community.
Additionally, our retreat is built on values of genuine connection and understanding, helping participants to see Kenya beyond the stereotypes and immerse in its vibrant cultures. This retreat is not just a getaway; it’s an invitation to discover, learn, and grow.

  • Do you collaborate with local artisans, healers, or wellness practitioners in the community? How do you approach this partnership?

Yes, we collaborate with local artisans who bring incredible knowledge and authenticity to the retreat. Each partnership is approached with respect and a desire to support the local community meaningfully. I work
closely with these partners to ensure that their voices and practices are honored, allowing retreat participants to gain authentic insights into Kenya’s cultural wealth. This exchange is vital to our mission, as it provides a richer experience for our guests while creating opportunities for local experts to showcase their unique skills and stories.

  • How do you give back to the local community, and why is that important to you?

Giving back is integral to our retreat, as we recognize the beauty and resources Kenya offers. Part of our commitment includes hiring locally and contributing to community projects. For me, it’s essential to support the places and people that have welcomed us so warmly, as this enriches the experience for everyone involved and reinforces the spirit of connection and mutual growth.

  • What inspired you to pursue a career in wellness and to establish your retreat in Kenya specifically?

My journey into wellness began with a fascination for the mind-body connection, which I explored as a Sport Psychologist. I realized how powerful movement, particularly dance, can be in transforming our mental and emotional states. Over the years, Kenya became a second home to me, and it felt right to create something that would allow others to experience the magic, resilience, and beauty of this place.
Establishing the retreat here aligns with my mission to push boundaries and offer experiences that are rooted in authenticity, culture, and self discovery.

  • What do you wish more people understood about the relationship
    between travel, nature, and wellness?

I believe travel, nature, and wellness are interconnected, providing opportunities to break out of routines, embrace diversity, and grow from new experiences. Travel allows people to see beyond their world, nature grounds us, and wellness offers tools for self-reflection and healing. This combination is transformational, helping people reconnect with themselves and the world in a meaningful way.

  • How have you seen wellness trends evolve in Kenya, and what changes
do you foresee in the coming year. What’s your vision for the future of
wellness tourism in Kenya, and how do you see your retreat playing a
    role in it?

Wellness tourism in Kenya is growing, with trends evolving toward more authentic, experience-based retreats. In the coming year, I foresee an increased demand for immersive experiences that prioritize meaningful engagement over superficial luxury. My vision is for Kenya to become known as a wellness destination, not just for its breathtaking landscapes but for the transformative experiences it offers. I see AWJ Retreat playing a key role in this by creating spaces where people from all over the world come to embrace their potential, connect with themselves, and experience the best of Kenya’s natural and cultural
wonders.
